Can you create your virtual assistant home office on a low budget? YES! Let’s discuss how you can get the essentials without breaking the bank.

Work desk with computer and other items

In this previous blog post, I highlighted some factors to consider when choosing the right workspace. In this post, we go deeper into sourcing suitable items to outfit your space.

1. Prioritize Your Needs

List down the absolute must-haves for your work. You can put these at the top of the list:

  • a reliable laptop or desktop
  • a comfortable chair
  • a functional desk
  • a good headset

2. Buy Second-Hand Items

Consider buying secondhand equipment. You can find gently used laptops, furniture, and peripherals online, at local thrift stores or garage sales. The price tags would suit your low budget and can save you a substantial amount.

3. Explore Lifetime Deals on Software

I recommend you check out AppSumo for software that are very affordable. They have a wide variety from which to choose and you usually pay once for lifetime access. For example, you can buy AppSumo’s TidyCal for appointment scheduling. For only $29 USD, you can have your own booking page with unlimited bookings per month and a whole lot more.

4. Office Supplies on a Budget

Since you’re working virtually, you’ll still need some office supplies. Stock up on pens, notepads and other office supplies during back-to-school and holiday sales. You can also look for discounts at local office supply stores.

5. Lighting on a Shoestring

Good lighting is a must when you’re on video calls. Use natural light whenever possible by placing your desk near a window. You can also buy affordable LED desk lamps or ring lights for a professional look.

6. Internet Connection

Is your internet service provider giving you the best deal? Shop around to find budget-friendly plans that offer decent speeds. You can also get bundles that include cable or phone service and get extra discounts.

7. Noise-Canceling Apps

If you live in a noisy area or have noise distractions at home, explore free or low-cost noise-canceling apps and software to create a distraction-free environment.

8. Cash Back Websites

If you can, shop through cash back websites like Rakuten and Honey to furnish your home office. Rakuten gives you cash back on your online purchases including office equipment and supplies. Honey identifies discounts on the sites and provides you with coupon codes.

Final Thoughts

Your budget may be limited but your resourcefulness has no bounds. Creating a virtual assistant home office that works for you is proof of your determination.
